It is recommended that this procedure be reserved for those who do not respond to the more conservative procedures such as UPPP, tongue, and/or radiofrequency therapy. MMO surgery is used when mandible advancement is not sufficient to improve the posterior airway space.
The goal of MMO is to move the maxilla and mandible as far forward as possible, thereby enlarging and increasing the overall clearing of the posterior airway space. In most patients a maximum advancement of 8-12mm can be achieved. This procedure has been successful in greater that 90% of those treated after having UPPP and tongue advancement procedures.
